Let’s do the sign up math or break it down on this phenomenon.
Did 10 million users “join” Threads in less than 10 hours before they had the time to eat, sleep, and wake up and have all their accounts verified with blue check marks with hundreds and thousands of likes, followers and “rethreads”? If it is so, then it beaks all known physical laws of science and social engagement.
It is after all correct to say that 10 million “joined” instead of newly signed up which was actually aided by the integration of Instagram. Here’s the scenario:
1. When I signed up for Facebook with many accounts, I also had that many corresponding Instagram accounts automatically assigned or created with the same IDs and login credentials. Facebook has about 3 billion users.
2. Instagram also has about 2 billion users and I am one of them by automatic integration if I would have chosen to use that application.
3. Thus, without having to “sign up” like a new user, I also have a “Threads” account if I choose to “download” that app which I did do that to simply check.
4. So, taking the above scenario into account, how many users are there for Meta if only these three apps are taken into account? Is it about 6 billion users or still about 2.5 billion users but on three apps? I am sure there are those who have signed up only for one app or the other (though they are automatically given the other accounts between FB and Instagram as said) but in the end what is the total number of users? The correct answer is about 2.5 billion who may be using all three or either of those apps without the public knowing about any net gain of real new users. There could be new users no doubt but it is hard to tell how many. It is no doubt very impressive that millions are “joining” Threads everyday.
5. You could also say that potentially, the Threads app already has 1 billion users because of the “Instagram” integration effect.
6. The Threads app already looks like a clone of Instagram with some features copied from Twitter. Will all these millions who are joining Threads have any effect on Twitter? I don’t think so but it remains to be seen.
7. When I posted a comment in the Threads app, I did not get any views or likes or such like I get on Twitter though I only have three followers. Why? because I am not active on Instagram though I have an account there and don’t follow anyone. So…the INSTAGRAM effect = 10 million users in 10 hours on day one…go figure that out. With technology and booster technology, anything is possible, right?

Accounts
“Threads accounts are closely integrated with Instagram accounts. Threads and Instagram accounts share the same username, profile picture and name, with users only able to change these details through Instagram. Users are also able to select which followed accounts on Instagram carry over to Threads, either with the other person’s Threads account already created or set to automatically follow them once an account is created…”
In other words, Threads is really a subset or a duplicate of Instagram with a few changes to make it look like Twitter and so that’s why you have 30 million+ already showing as “users” on the first day.
